Alonso to miss Confederations Cup: Reports

MADRID: Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso looks set to be ruled out of Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque's final 23-man squad for the Confederations Cup, according to various Spanish media sources on Sunday.

The 31-year-old has been hampered by a groin injury in recent weeks and has not been given the all-clear by Madrid's doctors to take part in the competition which starts on June 15.

Alonso was included in Del Bosque's preliminary 26-man squad announced earlier this week, but he is expected to be one of the three players cut from that list when the final squad is named later on Sunday.

The former Liverpool star's absence is likely to mean either Real Betis' Benat Extebarria or Javi Garcia of Manchester City will be included in the squad.

Arsenal's Nacho Monreal is also not expected to make the final cut due to a back problem which has prevented him from playing since the beginning of May.
